Infectious diseases, Part 21: Staph Food Poisoning

As we saw when we discussed MRSA, Staphylococcus (Sp. estafilococo) is a genus of bacteria that colonize the skin, mucous membranes, and upper respiratory tracts of mammals and birds including, of course, humans. Most of the 40 species of this genus are harmless, but a few of them cause infections and some strands of those species have developed ways to counteract the body’s defense mechanisms and the antibiotics medicine has created to deal with them.

Staphylococcus aureus (Sp. estafilococo dorado), which we discussed in the section on MRSA, is the most dangerous of all the Staphylococcus species, responsible for most Staphylococcus infections, also known as staph infections, such as skin infections, pneumonia, food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome, and blood poisoning (bacteremia). Many healthy adults carry this bacterium in their biomes without adverse effects, however: 20% of us have it in in the skin and 30% in the nose. However, in certain contexts and under a weakened immune system, this bacteria is responsible for many different types of infections around the body, including localized skin infections, such as ear infections; diffuse skin infection, such as cellulitis; deep, localized infections, such as septic arthritis, and so on.

In addition, Staphylococcus aureus excretes substances that are toxic to the body, that is, toxins (Sp. toxinas). The New Latin noun toxin [ˈtɒk.sɪn] (Sp. toxina [t̪ok.ˈsi.na]) was created in 1886 from the stem tox‑ of the adjective toxic and the Latinate suffix ‑in. The adjective toxic (Sp. tóxico/a) comes from an actual Latin word, Late Latin toxĭcus ‘poisoned’, derived from the Latin noun toxĭcum ‘poison’, a loanword from Greek τοξικόν (toxikón) ‘poison for arrows’, from τοξικός (toxikós) ‘pertaining to bows’, from τόξον (tóxon) ‘bow’.

The main toxin produced by the S. aureus bacterium is known as Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) or enterotoxin type B (Sp. enterotoxina estafilocócica B). This is the main toxin associated with food poisoning in humans. An enterotoxin is ‘a toxin produced in or affecting the intestines’ (COED). The word enterotoxin is New Latin word created in the 1930’s from Ancient Greek ἔντερον (énteron) ‘intestine’ and the word toxin. Food poisoning by SEB is known as Staphylococcal Food Poisoning or Staph Food Poisoning for short (Sp. intoxicación alimentaria por estafilococo dorado).

If one ingests a toxin such as SEB, that is, if one ingests food contaminated with it, it results in food poisoning, a form of gastrointestinal illness. The toxins can come from the skin, coughing, or sneezing of food handlers. The bacteria rapidly can grows rapidly at room temperature and excrete enterotoxins, especially in certain food products, such as cream, mayonnaise, meats, and dairy, which may not be easily detectable by smell or spoiled appearance, for instance. Staph bacteria are easily killed by cooking, but not so the toxins that they produce.

Those affected by food poisoning may experience vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. The illness is not contagious typically does not last more than one day, though it depends on the dose. SEB can also non-menstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in women (Sp. síndrome del choque tóxico no menstrual). This toxin has been considered for biological warfare since it is stable and can be easily aerosolized (sprayed) and since ‘it can cause systemic damage, multiorgan system failure, and even shock and death when inhaled at very high dosages’.[i]

As we have seen the equivalent of Eng. food poisoning in Spanish is intoxicación alimentaria. This points to a difference in meaning between the cognates Eng. intoxication [ɪn.ˌtɒk.sɪ.ˈkeɪ̯.ʃən] and Sp. intoxicación [in.t̪ok.si.ka.θi̯on], which are obviously derived from the cognate adjectives Eng. toxic ~ Sp. tóxico/a that we saw earlier. More specifically, these nouns are related to and derived from the cognate verbs Eng. intoxicate ~ Sp. intoxicar. They are loanwords from Medieval Latin intoxĭcāre, derived from the Latin adjective toxĭcus (fem. toxĭca), derived from the noun toxĭcum ‘poison in which arrows were dipped’, a loanword from Ancient Greek τοξικόν (toxikón) (see above).

The Classical Latin verb derived from this noun was toxĭcāre ‘to smear or anoint with poison’, but in Medieval Latin the prefix in‑ was added to this verb and from the verb, the noun intoxĭcātĭōnem (nominative intoxĭcātĭo) ‘poisoning’, was derived from the verb’s past participle stem. English and Spanish borrowed both the verb and the noun from Latin. In English, the verb intoxicate (borrowed from the passive participle form of the verb, intoxĭcātus) is attested by the middle of the 15th century and the noun intoxication is attested half a century later. The words show up in French at around the same time, so it is not clear if French had an influence on the appearance of the English words or, less likely, the other way round.[1] Spanish intoxicar and intoxicación are attested a little bit later, by the beginning of the 16th century.

The meaning of the English and Spanish verbs was originally ‘to poison’ and of the nouns ‘poisoning’, just like in the Medieval Latin source words. However, a change in the meaning of the English words rendered these cognates less than perfect friends. More specifically, by the late 16th century, the English verb intoxicate was being used with the meaning ‘to make drunk’ and by the mid-17th century we find the noun intoxication with the meaning ‘drunkenness’. Thus, in Modern English, the ‘poison’ meaning is archaic according to some dictionaries (e.g. COED) or obsolete according to others (e.g. OED). The main sense of Eng. intoxicate in English is, according to the OED, ‘to stupefy, render unconscious or delirious, to madden or deprive of the ordinary use of the senses or reason, with a drug or alcoholic liquor; to inebriate, make drunk’. More common than the verb is the adjective intoxicated derived (in English) from the verb’s past participle, equivalent to Sp. ebrio/a, borracho/a, embriagado/a.

Thus, English uses the noun poisoning in the context of food, not intoxication like Spanish and French do.[2] The noun poisoning [ˈpʰɔɪ̯z.ə.nɪŋ], derived from the verb to poison [ˈpʰɔɪ̯z.ən], means ‘illness caused by swallowing, touching, or breathing in a poisonous substance’ (DOCE). This verb, which appears in English around the year 1300, is derived, in English, from the noun poison, already attested a hundred years earlier. This noun was a loan from patrimonial Old French poison or puison (Modern French poison [pwa.ˈzɔ̃]), which meant ‘a drink’, in particular ‘a medical drink’, which by the 14th century also came to mean ‘(magic) potion, poisonous drink’. This word came from Lat. potĭōnem (nominative potĭo) ‘a drink’, but also in some contexts ‘a poisonous drink’. The noun is derived from potāre ‘to drink’ (cf. Eng. potable ~ Sp. potable ‘fit to drink’).

Obviously, the word potion [ˈpʰ̯ʃ.ən] in English is a doublet of the word poison, one that came directly from Latin, not through French. The Spanish cognate is poción, also a learned loanword from Latin, which is a good friend of Eng. potion, since they both mean ‘a liquid with healing, magical, or poisonous properties’ (COED). Spanish does have a patrimonial version of this word, and thus a doublet of poción, namely ponzoña (also attested as pozoña in Old Spanish), which is archaic in many dialects of Spanish. Its meaning is very similar to that of Eng. poison.[3]

However, the most common word for ‘poison’ in Spanish is veneno, which is a cognate of Eng. venom. These two words are partial friends since they share the sense ‘poison from an animal’, that is, ‘poisonous fluid secreted by animals such as snakes and scorpions and typically injected into prey or aggressors by biting or stinging’ (COED). However, Sp. veneno also has the sense ‘poison from chemicals or plants’. In other words, Sp. veneno is the generic term for ‘poison’ or ‘toxic substance’. These words come from Lat. vĕnēnum ‘potion, juice, drug’, in particular ‘a potion that destroys life, poison, venom (cf. toxicum)’ and ‘a magical potion, charm’ (L&S).[4] The more common form of the word in Old Spanish was venino. When English borrowed venom [ˈvɛn.əm] from Old French in the mid-13th century, it was spelled venim, since it came from Old French venim. All of this points to the existence of a Vulgar Latin version vĕnīnum of Classical Latin vĕnēnum from which the patrimonial French and Spanish words descend. This would mean that Spanish veneno is a semi-patrimonial word, namely a patrimonial descendant of a Latin word, but one whose form was altered at some point to make it look more like the original Classical Latin word.

This noun veneno eventually replaced ponzoña in most dialects for most purposes after the 16th century. Related to this noun is the adjective venenoso/a ‘poisonous’ (earlier veninoso/a) and the verb envenenar ‘to poison’ (earlier enveninar and aveninar). Cognates of Sp. veneno in other Romance languages include French venin, Galician veleno, Italian veleno, Sicilian vilenu, Occitan veren or verin, and Catalan veri.

The English word wish also descends from a word that contained the same root (cf. Proto-Germanic *wunskijaną ‘to wish’).

Infectious diseases, Part 20: MRSA (Sp. SARM)

As we have seen, one way to classify bacteria is by their shape (§34.2.9.1). Spherical bacteria are called cocci, sing. coccus, from Greek κόκκος (kókkos) ‘grain, seed’. The word coccus (pl. cocci) by itself is used now for any spherical bacterium. Rod-shaped bacteria, on the other hand, are called băcilli, sing. băcillus ‘small staff, wand’, diminutive of Latin băcŭlum ‘stick, staff’.

The bacterium that we are going to look at in this section belongs to the genus Staphylococcus [ˌstæf.ɪ.lə.ˈkɒ.kəs] (Sp. estafilococo), or staph for short, which is of the coccus type, as its name indicates. Bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus are spherical gram-positive parasitic bacteria that usually occur in grapelike clusters, cause pus formation, and infections such as boils and septicemia. The bacteria genus name Staphylococcus is a New Latin term coined in the late 19th century (1887). The term means something like ‘spherical bacterium occurring in chains or bunches’.  It was created out of two Ancient Greek words: σταφυλή (staphulḗ) ‘bunch of grapes’ and κόκκος (kókkos) ‘grain, seed’.

There are about 40 species in the genus Staphylococcus, most of which are harmless and are found in the skin and mucous membranes of humans and other organisms. The main species that causes infection in humans is Staphylococcus aureus, named in 1884 by Friedrich Julius Rosenbach. The name is composed of the genus name Staphylococcus and the Latin adjective aureus ‘golden’ (Sp. áureo, learned), derived from aurum ‘gold’ (Sp. oro, patrimonial), which is due to its yellowish color. Because of this, it is also known as golden staph in English, in addition to its technical Latin name. In Spanish, it is also known as estafilococo áureo or estafilococo dorado. This bacterium too is part of the normal flora or microbiome of the human body and it is not always pathogenic, though there are some pathogenic strains which can cause infection when the immune system is down or when it enters certain sensitive areas of the body. It is estimated that 20-30% of humans are long-term carriers of this bacterium, though they are not necessarily infected by it.

Wikipedia summarizes the pathogenic effect of Staphylococcus aureus thus:
S. aureus can cause a range of illnesses, from minor skin infections, such as pimples, impetigo, boils, cellulitis, folliculitis, carbuncles, scalded skin syndrome, and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome, bacteremia, and sepsis. It is still one of the five most common causes of hospital-acquired infections and is often the cause of wound infections following surgery. Each year, around 500,000 patients in hospitals of the United States contract a staphylococcal infection, chiefly by S. aureus. Up to 50,000 deaths each year in the USA are linked with S. aureus infections.[i]
Staphylococcus aureus infections were the cause of many deaths until antibiotics were discovered. Penicillin, the first antibiotic, discovered in 1928, was originally effective against this bacterium. However, a strain of Staphylococcus aureus became resistant to penicillin (Sp. penicilina) already in 1947. For a while, another antibiotic from the penicillin family was still effective, namely methicillin (Sp. meticilina). However, in 1961, a mutation resulted in a new strain of the bacterium that was resistant even to methicillin, which was a serious cause for concern. The new strain of Staphylococcus aureus came to be known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, typically known by its acronym, MRSA. The name of the disease can be pronounced as a regular acronym, [ˈɛm ˈɑɹ ˈɛs ˈ̯] or, more commonly, as a pseudo-word, [ˈmɜɹ.sə]. The name in Spanish is the calqued Spanish phrase Staphylococcus aureus resistente a la meticilina, which is also known by its acronym SARM, pronounced [ˈsaɾm].

MRSA infections are typically associated with hospitals, which is where such bacteria first developed and which is where most people acquire MRSA infections. MRSA infections acquired in hospitals are known as hospital associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). More recently, two other types of MRSA are recognized according to their source: community associated (CA-MRSA), which emerged in the 1990s, and livestock associated (LA-MRSA), which has appeared in some countries. There are different strains of MRSA, which vary in part according to their source. According to the CDC, there were more than 80,000 invasive (life-threatening) MRSA infections in the US in the year 2011 which resulted in over 11,000 deaths. The good news is that the number of invasive MRSA infections and deaths in healthcare settings is on the decline, so that hospital infections for instance declined 54% between 2005 and 2011. Also, we should keep in mind that just like about a third of all healthy people carry S. aureus in their biome, two percent of the population is said to carry MRSA without resulting in infection.

The MRSA strains (Sp. cepas) of Staphylococcus aureus have become resistant to β-lactam antibiotics, which include methicillin, penicillin, oxacillin, and amoxicillin. Most recently, by 1996, strains developed that are resistant to vancomycin, one antibiotic that was still effective. The drug of choice to treat MRSA now is vancomycin, which is 49% effective. However, some strains of S. aureus have become resistant to this antibiotic as well. They are known as VRSA, which stands for Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. More recently, strains of MRSA have been discovered that are resistant even to both vancomycin and teicoplanin, another antibiotic used to treat S. aureus infections. These strains of the MRSA bacterium are known as VISA, which stands for Vancomycin Intermediate-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In cases in which the strain is resistant to those antibiotics, linezolid in still effective in most cases (87%). Two other antibiotics of last resort are clindamycin [ˌklɪn.də.ˈmaɪ̯.sɪn] and ceftaroline [sɛf.ˈtæɹ.oʊ̯.lin].

Infectious diseases, Part 19: Smallpox (Sp. viruela)

As we saw when we discussed chickenpox (Sp. varicela), the term pox refers to ‘any of several viral diseases producing a rash of pimples that become pus-filled and leave pockmarks on healing’ (COED). It is a late 15th century respelling of the word pockes, plural of pocke or (Modern English) pock, which comes from Old English pocc ‘pustule, blister, ulcer, mark on the skin’. The term pox by itself has referred primarily to syphilis since the 16th century.

Smallpox (Sp. viruela) is the most serious of all the poxes. It is ‘an acute, highly infectious, often fatal disease caused by a poxvirus and characterized by high fever and aches with subsequent widespread eruption of pimples that blister, produce pus, and form pockmarks’, which usually leave permanent scars (AHD). The virus in question belongs to the Poxviridae family of viruses that infects humans and vertebrates more generally, as well as arthropods. There are 69 species in this family, with two subfamilies and 28 genera, four of which infect humans. The smallpox virus, also known as variola, is from the Orthopox genus, just like the cowpox virus. There are two major types of smallpox, the more common (90%) and virulent variola major (Sp. viruela mayor) and the less common and less virulent variola minor (Sp. viruela menor). Those who have contracted variola minor, or even cowpox as we shall see, acquire immunity to the more virulent variety.

As we just saw, the technical term for the smallpox virus is variola [vǝ.ˈɹ̯.ǝl.ǝ], which has also been used in English as a medical term for the smallpox disease since the late 18th century. The word variola is a New Latin medical term that comes from Vulgar Latin where the word meant something like ‘pustule, pock’. It was a plural diminutive wordform (varĭ-ŏl-a) derived from Lat. varĭus ‘various, mottled, speckled, variegated’ (văr‑ĭ‑us), itself derived from Lat. vărus ‘pustule, pimple, blotch, eruption on the face’ (văr‑us).

The Spanish term for the disease is viruela [bi.ˈɾu̯e.la], which descends from the Latin word varĭŏla, as do the names for the disease in other Romance languages, cf. Fr. variole, Cat. verola, It. vaiolo, Port. variola. The word viruela comes from an earlier veruela, which was a patrimonial descendant of Vulgar Lat. varĭŏla, reflecting the expected sound changes that patrimonial words undergo, such as the metathesis of the short ‑ĭ following an ‑r‑ (intermediate step: vaĭrŏla), the de-diphthongization of the ‑aĭ‑ diphthong to ‑e‑,[1] and the diphthongization of the stressed Latin short ‑ŏ‑ to ‑ue‑. The additional raising of the ‑e‑ to ‑i‑ happened later and must be the result of the effect of the wau [u̯] in the following syllable (cf. Part I, Chapter 10).

In addition to being the name of the disease, ‘smallpox’, the word viruela can also mean ‘pockmark’, which was the word’s original meaning, as we saw, and it can even be used for marks or bumps that appear on flat surfaces, such as leaves. The phrase picado de viruelas translates as pockmarks. There is an old Spanish expression that contains this word, namely A la vejez, viruelas ‘In old age, smallpox’. It is used when an old person displays behaviors or attitudes that are more proper of younger people, especially of the person did not display those behaviors or attitudes at a younger age. It is used for example when an old person gets madly in love or has a love affair. The expression may come from the title of a 1825 play by Manuel Bretón de los Herreros about two old people in love, though it is also possible that the expression already existed prior to that.

Smallpox has been around for thousands of years, and it has been one of the most devastating of diseases for humans, with mortality reaching one third of the population during some outbreaks. By the 16th century, smallpox was well-established in Europe. Europeans brought smallpox to the Americas and it was one of the major diseases from the ‘Old World’ that devastated native American populations, including the Tainos, the Aztecs and the Incas. In some cases, the fatality rates were as high as 80-90%. Similar rates applied to the Native American populations in North America. In Europe too, smallpox was the leading cause of death until the 18th century, killing some 400 thousand people a year.

The smallpox vaccine was the first vaccine to be developed, in the late 18th century in Europe, though other cultures had their own methods of achieving smallpox inoculation. In Africa and China and perhaps other places as well, methods had been developed for people to acquire the variola minor form of the disease, resulting in immunization for variola major as well. The name variolation (Sp. variolación) has been used for all forms of ‘deliberate inoculation of an uninfected person with the smallpox virus (as by contact with pustular matter) that was widely practiced before the era of vaccination’ (WNTIU).

In Europe, modern inoculation started when Edward Jenner, an English physician and scientist, observed that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox, a very mild disease in humans, did not later catch smallpox. Thus, by exposing people to the virus Variolae vaccinae, literally ‘smallpox of the cow’ or ‘cow pox’, people became inoculated to smallpox. The word vaccīnae ‘of the cow’ from the name of this virus, genitive form of Lat. vaccīnus, derived from Lat. vacca ‘cow’ and the adjectival suffix īn‑(us/a), gave the name to the smallpox inoculation, vaccine in French and English  (vacc‑īn‑us/a). Then, in 1881, Louis Pasteur proposed using the name vaccine for all types of inoculations in Jenner’s honor.

The adjectival form of the word for ‘cow’ in Spanish is vacuno/a ‘bovine, of a cow’, derived from vaca ‘cow’, as in ganado vacuno ‘(beef) cattle’. (In Argentina, the phrase ganado vacuno has been shortened to vacuno, so that vacuno is now used as a noun meaning ‘cattle’.) The word vacuno would seem to come from a variant of the Latin word vaccīnus, namely vaccūnus, for the ‑ūn‑ suffix was a variant of the ‑īn‑ suffix in Latin (vacc‑ūn‑us). It is from the feminine form of this adjective, vacuna, that comes the word for ‘vaccine’ in Spanish. Eng. vaccine and Sp. vacuna descend from the same Latinate root vacca meaning ‘cow’ and have allomorphs of the same suffix, so they are technically cognates. From these nouns, English developed the verb vaccinate and Spanish the verb vacunar, which are also, technically speaking, cognates.


[1] In other words, the sound combination Lat. ‑ari‑ (followed by a vowel) always becomes Old Sp. ‑er‑ in patrimonial words, after having changed to ‑air‑ along the way (metathesis). This includes words with the suffix ‑ari(us/a), which becomes ‑er‑(o/a), such as primarius, which became primero. (In Portuguese, the Lat. ‑air‑ became ‑eir‑.)

Lat. vărĭus became vero in Old Spanish, which was homophonouns with vero ‘true’ from Lat. vērus ‘true’, which may have something to do with why it stopped being used and why the latter vero was changed to verdadero ‘true’, derived from verdad ‘truth’. The learned vario is an adjective almost exclusively used in the plural, with the meaning ‘different, diverse’ as well as ‘varied, assorted’ and (only in the plural) ‘some, several’.

Infectious diseases, Part 18: Scabies (Sp. sarna)

The word scabies ['skeɪ̯.biz] refers to ‘a contagious skin disease caused by a parasitic mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) and characterized by intense itching’ (AHD). The word scabies is also used for ‘a similar disease in animals, especially sheep’ (AHD). The itching is due to an allergic reaction to the mites, which are actually the female mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, an ectoparasite (Sp. ácaro parásito) that burrows into the skin to live and deposit eggs. Although it is under half a millimeter in size, it is sometimes visible to the naked eye. Mites (Sp. ácaros) belong to the same phylogenetic class (Arachnida) as spiders and ticks. They are ‘any of various small or minute arachnids of the order Acarina that are often parasitic on animals and plants, infest stored food products, and in some species transmit disease’ (AHD).

This disease is sometimes also referred to in English as the seven-year itch, presumably because its symptoms decline after that many years. However, the term is rather imprecise in this regard since it is also used to refer to STD’s, whose outbursts also tend to decline after seven years.[1]

The scabies skin disease was first described and named by Roman medical writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus around 2,000 years ago. The Latin word chosen to name the disease was scăbĭēs, which meant ‘roughness, scurf’ and ‘scab, mange, itch’. This noun is related to the adjective scăber (fem. scăbra, neut. scăbrum, regular root scăbr‑), meaning ‘rough, scurfy, scabrous (esp. from uncleanness)’ (L&S) and/or from the verb scăbĕre ‘to scratch, scrape’. The choice of the word scăbĭes would seem to have to do with the rough aspect of the infected skin and/or the associated itch. English borrowed the word scabies for this disease from Latin around the year 1400.

Spanish did not keep the Latin word scăbĭēs for this disease but, rather, it uses the word sarna, a word common to the Iberian Romance languages and found in Late Latin. Its origin is uncertain but it is thought to be of pre-Roman Iberian origin. It has been suggested that this word is related to Basque sarra ‘rust, iron residue, etc.’, for example, and to words in neighboring Romance languages with various meanings.

Derived from sarna, Spanish has the adjective sarnoso/a which, when speaking of skin, means ‘itchy’ or ‘scabby’, when speaking of a person means ‘suffering from scabies, scabious’, and when speaking of a dog means ‘mangy’, i.e. ‘suffering from mange’, which is ‘a skin disease of mammals caused by parasitic mites and occasionally communicable to humans, typically causing severe itching and hair loss’ (COED). The name mange [ˈmeɪ̯nʤ] for this animal disease comes from Old French manjue or mangeue ‘itch; eating’, which is derived from the verb mangier ‘to eat’ (Modern French manger [mɑ̃.ˈʒe]), from Latin manducāre ‘to chew, masticate’.

Spanish does have a learned, technical word for scabies that comes from the Latin root scabi‑, namely escabiosis, derived from the Latin noun plus the suffix ‑osis that indicates disease in Medical Latin. English does not have an exact cognate for this New Latin term. Spanish also has the medical term is the adjective escabioso, which is equivalent to the popular sarnoso. It is a loanword from the Latin adjective scabiōsus ‘rough, wrinkled, etc.’. English does have a cognate of this adjective, namely scabious, though it is quite rare.[2] It means ‘of or relating to scabies’, ‘having scabs’ (AHD), ‘affected with mange; scabby’ (COED).

The English word scab [ˈskæb] that we just saw in the definition of scabious is an interesting one, for contrary to what one might have thought, it is not related to scabies. The word is a mid-13th century loanword from Old Norse skabb and its main meaning is ‘a dry, rough protective crust that forms over a cut or wound during healing’ (COED). However, presumably because of its similarity to the word scabies, the word scab has come to have the meaning ‘mange or a similar skin disease in animals’ as well as ‘any of a number of fungal diseases of plants in which rough patches develop, especially on apples and potatoes’ (COED).

There is one other Latin word derived from the same root as scăbĭēs, namely the Late Latin adjective scăbrōsus, derived from the also adjective scăber (see above): scăbr‑ōs‑us. English and Spanish borrowed this word in the second half of the 16th century, English as scabrous and Spanish as escabroso/a. Since it is first attested in French in 1501, Fr. scabreux, it is quite likely that both English and Spanish borrowed it through French, not directly from Latin. When said of terrain, Sp. escabroso/a, which means ‘rough, rugged’, but it can also be used figuratively, translating as thorny, tricky, tough, difficult, or distasteful when speaking of a topic or a subject, or as shocking, gory, or lurid when speaking of a scene or a story. The main meaning of Eng. scabrous is ‘rough and covered with, or as if with, scabs’ but it also has a figurative meaning, namely ‘salacious or sordid’. As we can see, the two cognates are false friends, except perhaps in some figurative sense, one which most likely was borrowed through French.

Finally we should mention a well-known Spanish saying, used particularly in Spain, that contains the word sarna, namely Sarna con gusto no pica. Literally it means ‘Scabies that gives you pleasure is not itchy’. The figurative meaning of this saying is that if you enjoy or derive pleasure from something very much, such as scratching an itch, then that more than makes up for the itch. Or, in other words, the benefits of doing something outweigh the negative aspects associated with it. This saying is used particularly to refer to those who pursue some illicit pleasure and who put up with the negative consequences associated with it. A commonly heard retort to this saying is …pero mortifica ‘but it does torment’, which emphasizes that there are still negative consequences to be had for the pleasure-seeking behavior.

[2] Sp. escabiosa is also the name of a plant, also known as lengua de vaca or viuda silvestre, a flowering plant of the Caprifoliaceae (honeysuckle) family, genus Knautia. The scientific name is Knautia arvensis. It is commonly known in English as field scabious. The reason for the plant’s name is that it was used to treat scabies and other skin afflictions.

Infectious diseases, Part 17: Salmonellosis (or salmonella) (Sp. salmonelosis or salmonela)

The word salmonella [ˌsæl.mə.ˈnɛl.ə] refers to ‘a type of bacteria that exists in several forms, some of which live in food and make the people who eat it ill’, as well as to ‘the illness caused by this bacteria’ (CALD). The genus itself is referred to as salmonella, as well as the two species and several subspecies of this bacterium. The genus belongs to the family of Enterobacteriaceae.

The bacterium was named after Daniel Elmer Salmon (1850-1914), a veterinary pathologist that was in charge of the Veterinary Division of the United States Department of Agriculture in the 1880’s where a particular variant of this bacterium was discovered. The name Salmonella for the bacterium was suggested by Joseph Leon Lignières around the year 1900 and it stuck. As for the ending, ‑ella, this is a feminine diminutive suffix in Latin (masc. ‑ellus) and still is in Italian (e.g. mozzarella, diminutive of mozza, a type of cheese), a cognate of the Spanish diminutive suffix ‑illa (masc.: ‑illo, cf. Part I, Chapter 5, §5.3). The suffix ‑ella is used in biology to create New Latin taxonomic names, especially genus names of bacteria, such as Pasteurella, Legionella, and Salmonella.

Spanish adopted the exact same name for the bacterium, borrowed from English or, rather, from the New Latin word Salmonella. Some dictionaries spell it with two l’s, just as in the Latin and English words, such as the María Moliner and VOX dictionaries, although the word is supposed to be pronounced as if it had only one l, just like its English counterpart: [sal.mo.ˈne.la]. According to the Academia’s DLE dictionary, however, the Spanish word is spelled salmonela, with only one l.

The popular name for the disease caused by the Salmonella bacterium is also salmonella, just like the name for the bacterium genus. Actually, this would seem to be a shortened form of the phrase salmonella poisoning. The technical term for the illness, however, is salmonellosis. The Spanish equivalent names are salmonelosis (with one l) and intoxicación por salmonella. This word is formed with the suffix ‑osis, which as we have already seen, is used in medical terminology to denote a state of disease. The Latin suffix ‑ōsis comes from Ancient Greek ‑ωσις (-ōsis) ‘state, abnormal condition, or action’. The ‑ō‑ part comes from Greek ‑όω (-óō) stem verbs to which the suffix ‑σις (-sis) was added that derived nouns denoting action, process, state, condition.

The salmonella infection manifests itself with diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting after a 12-36 hour incubation period and the symptoms may last 4-7 days. Salmonellosis is one of the most common causes of diarrhea worldwide and it is caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. The foods most likely to be contaminated are eggs, poultry (19%), beef and pork meat (14%), unpasteurized milk or juice, cheese, and raw fruits and vegetables exposed to contaminated manure. Most people recover without treatment. If the bacteria enter the lymphatic system, then the toxins of the bacterium attack the vascular and nervous system, which may result in toxic shock and death. Such systemic salmonellosis results in typhoid fever and is thus also known as typhoidal salmonellosis, which contrasts with the other, non-typhoidal one. Typhoidal salmonellosis is rare in the United States. It has been estimated that in the United States there are 1.2 million cases of salmonellosis a year, involving some 20,000 hospitalizations, and close to 500 deaths.

Infectious diseases, Part 16: Rubella (German measles) (Sp. rubéola)

The disease known as rubella [ɹu.ˈbɛl.ə] in English and rubéola or rubeola in Spanish is ‘a mild, infectious, communicable viral disease, characterized by swollen glands, esp. of the back of the head and neck, and small red spots on the skin’ (WNW). It is caused by the rubella virus of the genus rubivirus or the Togaviridae family. The most dangerous thing about it is that it may result in ‘congenital defects in infants born to mothers infected during the first three months of pregnancy’ (AHD). Other names for this disease are German measles or three-day measles, since it results in a similar rash of red spots in the body.

Rubella is known in Spanish as rubéola,​ rubeola,​ or sarampión alemán, the latter being much rarer and obviously a calque of the English name. Note that in English, rubeola is another word for regular (English) measles, not for German measles or rubella, which is a totally different disease.

The word rubella is a late 19th century New Latin scientific name for this disease in English, but not in other languages. It is derived from the neuter plural form of the Latin adjective rŭbellus ‘reddish’ (fem. rŭbella), the diminutive of ruber ‘red’ (rŭb‑ell‑us). It was no doubt created on the pattern of the already existing word rubeola. Besides German measles, another earlier name for the disease was rötheln, a borrowing from German, used in the mid-19th century. In German, Rötheln was a plural diminutive noun derived from the adjective rot (earlier roth) ‘red’ (Röth‑el‑n). The  modern spelling of this word in German is Röteln [ˈrøːtl̩n], though Rubella is also used in German. Spanish seems to have borrowed the word rubéola from French rubéole [ʀy.be.ˈɔl], derived in the mid-19th century from Latin rubeus ‘red’ on the model of existing French rougeole and roséole (cf. Port. rubéola).[1]

The Latin adjective rŭber meant ‘red, ruddy’, with an alternative regular form rŭbrus (the adjective’s feminine form was rŭbra, neuter rŭbrum; regular root: rŭbr‑). Thus, the diminutive rŭbellus is not a regular derivation. Lat. rŭber descends from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰrós ‘red’, from the root *h₁rewdʰ‑. Another word derived from the adjective rŭber is the adjective rŭbĕus ‘reddish’ (rŭb‑ĕ‑us), from which comes patrimonial Sp. rubio ‘blond’ (rubia ‘blonde’). Also from the Latin  adjective rŭbĕus comes Fr. rouge [ˈʀuʒ], adjective and noun meaning ‘red (color)’. This word has been borrowed into English as rouge [ˈɹuʒ] to refer to ‘a red powder or cream used as a cosmetic for coloring the cheeks or lips’ (COED).[2] Derived from the same rŭbĕus is the Lat. rubeola, the source of the name for rubella in Spanish, rubéola or rubeola, and the source of the other name for measles in English, rubeola (see §34.3.26 above).

The rare Latin adjective rŭssus, which also meant ‘red’ (fem. russa, neut.: russum), is also derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₁rewdʰ‑ ‘red’ (*h₁rowdʰ-s-o-). This word is usually said to be the source of Sp. rojo [ˈro.xo], Fr. roux [ˈʀu] (fem. rousse [ˈʀus]), It. rosso [ˈros.so], all basic adjectives meaning ‘red’ today. Actually, Sp. rojo is more likely from the even rarer derived word rŭssĕus ‘reddish; bright red’ or else the Spanish word would be roso, not rojo.

The word rojo is unusual because although it seems like such a common patrimonial word, it is not attested until the 16th century. That is because the normal name for the red color in Old Spanish is bermejo. The alternative words colorado and encarnado appear around the same time as rojo. The reason seems to have been that Sp. rojo was originally the word for ‘reddish’, not for ‘red’, including the red in ‘red’ hair color. Hence the compound pelirrojo/a, an adjective meaning ‘red-haired, ginger-haired’ and a noun meaning ‘redhead’. The reason for bringing the rare word rojo for the basic color may have been influenced by other Romance languages.

Infectious diseases, Part 15: Rabies (Sp. rabia)

Rabies [ˈɹ̯.biz] (Sp. rabia) is ‘a contagious virus disease that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals and is transmitted to humans in saliva, esp. by dog bites, causing throat spasm on swallowing, aversion to water, convulsions, paralysis, and death’ (SOED). The virus in question, Rabies lyssavirus (Sp. virus de la rabia), belongs to the lyssavirus genus of RNA viruses in the family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales. The term Lyssavirus comes from the Greek λύσσα (lyssa) ‘rage, fury, rabies’ and the Latin word vīrus.[1]

This virus has a wide host range and can be transmitted by saliva and travels to the brain through the peripheral nerves of vertebrates, such as humans and other mammals. Globally, the disease involves mostly dogs, though in the Americas, bats are the main source of infection for humans, since vaccination has greatly reduced the incidence of the disease in dogs. Symptoms start between a month and three months after exposure. They start as a fever and tingling at the place of exposure and they expand to ‘violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness’ (WP). Once the disease shows symptoms, it is pretty much fatal. The number of deaths by rabies worldwide was around 17,000 in 2015, most of them in Africa and Asia.

The word for this disease comes from the Latin noun răbĭēs, whose primary meaning was ‘madness, rage, fury’, but which could also be used to refer to this disease. That is exactly the same situation that we find with the descendant of this word in Spanish, namely rabia, which can have both meanings: ‘rage, fury’ as well as ‘rabies’. This fifth declension feminine Latin noun changed to rabĭa in Vulgar Latin by adopting the typical feminine ending ‑a, which is the source of the patrimonial Spanish word.[2] English borrowed rabies from Latin in the late 16th century. The noun rabia is most commonly used in Spanish in the expression dar rabia ‘to make furious’, as in Lo que dijo me dio mucha rabia ‘What she said made me furious’ or Me da rabia tener que volver a empezar ‘It makes me furious having to start all over again’. A common expression involving this word is ¡Qué rabia! ‘How infuriating!’ or ‘How upsetting!’.

The Latin noun răbĭēs is derived from the root rab‑ of the intransitive verb răbĕre ‘to be mad, rave’ and the rare derivational suffix ‑ĭēs that formed fifth declension abstract nouns, usually out of adjectives. Two other nouns containing this suffix are pauperĭēs ‘poverty’, from pauper (genitive case: paupĕris; regular root: paupĕr‑) ‘poor, feeble’, from specĭēs ‘external appearance, etc.’, from specĕre ‘to watch, look at, etc.’ (source of Eng. species ~ Sp. especie and Eng. spice ~ Sp. especia).

Spanish does not have a verb derived from Lat. rabĕre, but it does have a very old verb rabiar derived, in Spanish, from the noun rabia. This intransitive verb means something like ‘to rage, be furious’ but only in some contexts and expressions, as in Juan está que rabia ‘Juan is raving furious’. Another common colloquial expression with this verb is a rabiar ‘extremely, awfully, with a vengeance’, which can be used to express an extreme of something, as in La quiere a rabiar ‘He’s madly in love with her’. Also common is the expression hacer rabiar, which is used about typical children’s behavior and is equivalent to Eng. to tease or to make mad, as in Siempre le hace rabiar a su hermanito ‘He’s always teasing his little brother/making him mad’.

Another name for rabies is hydrophobia (Sp. hidrofobia), which is the disease’s historical name since aversion to water and inability to swallow is one of the symptoms of rabies in humans. The term hydrophobia means ‘extreme or irrational fear of water, especially as a symptom of rabies’ (COED). It is a loanword from Latin hydrophobia, itself a loanword from Ancient Greek ὑδροφοβία (hudrophobía), formed from the combining form ὑδρ‑ of Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr) ‘water’ and the suffixoid -phobia ‘fear, aversion’ derived from Ancient Greek φόβος (phóbos) ‘fear’ (ὑδρ‑ο‑φοβ‑ία). To differentiate the ‘rabies’ sense of this word from the simple ‘irrational fear of water (and of drowning)’ sense, the term aquaphobia has been coined for the latter sense, which is formed from the Latin word for ‘water’, aqua (cf. patrimonial Sp. agua) and the same suffixoid (aqua‑phobia).

There are a couple more English words derived from the Latin root rab‑. The adjective rabid [ˈɹæb.ɪd]. It means ‘relating to or affected with rabies’ but, also, ‘extreme; fanatical’ (COED), as in a group of rabid right-wing fanatics (DOCE). It is an early 17th century loan from Lat. răbĭdus ‘raving, furious, enraged, savage, fierce, mad, rabid’ (L&S). This Latin word has not made it into Spanish, but another synonymous Latin adjective has, namely rabioso/a, first attested in the 13th century. It comes from the less common Latin adjective răbĭōsus ‘raving, fierce, mad, rabid’, formed with the adjectival suffix ‑ōs‑ (răbĭ‑ōs‑us; fem. răbĭōsa).

Finally, the English noun rage [ˈɹ̯ʤ], whose main meaning is ‘ violent uncontrollable anger’ (COED), can be traced to the Vulgar Latin noun rabia. In came into English in the 14th century through Old French rage or raige ‘fury, madness, etc.’, which is first attested in the 11th century and comes from Vulgar Latin rabia. The verb to rage is attested in English even earlier, in the 13th century, originally meaning ‘to go mad; to be mad; to act madly or foolishly’. Today, this intransitive verb means ‘to feel or express rage’ (COED). This verb came from the Old French verb ragier (Modern French rager [ʀa.ˈʒe] is used colloquially with the meaning ‘to fume, be raging mad’). From this verb, Old French derived the verb enragier by prefixation, meaning ‘go wild, go mad, etc.’, which was borrowed into English in the late 14th century as to enrage, a transitive verb that today means ‘to make very angry’ (COED). The adjective enraged derived from this verb’s identical past participle is actually more common than the verb.

In Greek mythology, Lyssa (Λύσσα) was ‘the spirit of mad rage, frenzy, and rabies in animals’, a personalization of these emotions. (The name was Lytta Λύττα in the Athenian dialect of Greek.) This personification of rage was closely related to the Maniae, which were were the personified spirits (daimones) of madness, insanity, and crazed frenzy (Sp. manías). The Roman equivalent of this spirit was known variously as Ira, Furor, or Rabies.
